More than 50 per cent of Canadians have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Data compiled from provincial and territorial health authorities shows that more than 20.6 million doses have been injected across the country, with 50.01 per cent of the population getting at least one jab as of Saturday.
Meanwhile, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization has updated its guidance on second shots, recommending that patients receive the same vaccine in round two as they did the first time.
But if that vaccine is unavailable, NACI suggests taking Johnson & Johnson in place of Oxford-AstraZeneca, and taking Moderna in place of Pfizer-BioNTech or vice-versa.
Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam issued a statement saying Canada has over 30 per cent fewer active cases compared to mid-April, when the pandemic’s third wave crested.
Tam says strong public-health measures must be maintained where COVID-19 is circulating, and suggests maintaining precautions over the long weekend to prevent a post-holiday surge.

Latest COVID-19 news in Ottawa
Ottawa Public Health advises additional vaccination appointments will be opening on Sunday at 8 am.
In addition, youth aged 12 and over in Ottawa can begin booking appointments on Sunday for COVID-19 vaccinations at community clinics. The youth must already be 12 years old to book an appointment online.
The Pfizer vaccine is currently the only COVID-19 vaccine that has been authorized by Health Canada for individuals aged 12 and over.
Visit Ontario.ca/bookvaccine to access the provincial booking system or call the provincial vaccine booking line at 1-833-943-3900 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., seven days a week.
As an alternative to community clinics, the province also announced that youth 12 and above may schedule appointments directly through select pharmacies administering the Pfizer vaccine.

Ottawa Public Health reported 78 new cases of the COVID-19 virus Saturday, with two new deaths.
There are 58 people in hospital with virus symptoms, 14 of them in ICU.
OPH knows of 935 active cases of COVID-19 in the city.
Officials say there have been 6,087 cases of variants of concern, 85 per cent of them the B.1.1.7. variant identified in the UK.
A total of 51 deaths have been attributed to variants of concern.
There were no new outbreaks reported in the health care or child care categories, which have 15 and five ongoing outbreaks respectively.

There were two new outbreaks in the community category (one in a health operation and three workplaces.)
In monitoring data, the seven-day rolling average of cases per 100,000 people is 57.7, while positivity in community testing is 5.5 per cent.
The reproductive number, R(t) is 0.86. A level below 1 indicates the virus is receding.
As of Friday night, 476,420 people had resolved their first dose of vaccine, while 39,201 had received two doses.
Latest COVID-19 data in Ontario
Ontario has reported 1,794 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, with 20 additional deaths.
The GTA remained the province’s hot spot: There were 416 new cases in Toronto, 355 in Peel, 147 in Durham and 140 in York Region.
The province reported Ottawa had 87 new cases on Friday. Ottawa Public Health reports its own data in the afternoon which can differ from the provincial figures because the data are compiled at different times of the day.
In other health units in the Ottawa area: Eastern Ontario health, which includes Cornwall and Hawkesbury, registered 12 new cases, Kingston had three new cases, Leeds, Grenville & Lanark reported six new cases and Renfrew County and District registered four.
There were 1,207 people hospitalized in the province, with 706 of them in intensive care, 504 of them on ventilators.
There were 2,520 newly resolved case of the virus.
Nearly 34,600 tests were completed province-wide.
As of 8 p.m. Friday, 7,925,277 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. The province set a new single-day record for vaccines, with 190,129 doses administered.

The figures bring the provincial totals to 520,774 confirmed cases and 8,599 deaths in Ontario since the pandemic began.
Latest COVID-19 news in Quebec
Quebec reported 505 new cases Saturday, bringing the total number of people infected since the pandemic began to 366,899.
It was the province’s lowest daily total since September.
There were seven new deaths, but one death previously attributed to COVID-19 was removed. The death toll is now 11,081.
There were 424 people in hospital, a drop of 13 in the previous day, while 103 people are in ICU, a drop of three.
In the Outaoauis, there were 22 new cases, for a pandemic total of 12,022. The death toll is at 211.
There were 94,075 doses of vaccine delivered in Quebec in the previous 24 hours, while 2,098 doses before May 21 were also added to the list for a total of 4,843,635.
