Ontario reports more than 3,000 COVID-19 cases, single-day vaccination record - CityNews Toronto

Ontario is reporting 3,166 new COVID-19 cases and 23 additional deaths on Friday.

The province says due to a technical issue, the case count may be underreported for the Central East, Central West and Toronto regions.

It is the second day in a row over 3,000 after case counts dipped below that mark the previous two days.

There were over 51,300 tests completed in the last 24 hour period, down slightly from the more than 54,000 a day ago.

Locally, there are 876 new cases in Toronto, 817 in Peel, 300 in York Region, 205 in Durham and 148 in Hamilton.

The province reported 3,424 cases and 26 deaths on Thursday.

Resolved cases have now outnumbered new cases for 17 consecutive days. There were 3,875 resolved cases.

There were 144,724 vaccine doses administered in the last 24 hour period. The number marks a new record for daily doses administered for the second straight day.

As of 8:00 p.m. Thursday, 5,885,485 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.

The province’s associate medical officer of health said that while daily COVID-19 case numbers are headed down, hospitals still face serious capacity issues.

Dr. Barbara Yaffe said she would be surprised if the economy fully reopens in two weeks when the province’s current stay-at-home order is to lift on May 20.

“Whatever is planned, hopefully, will be done very gradually and slowly,” she said. “We don’t want a wave four.”

Public officials say it is still unsafe to host holiday gatherings this weekend, even as COVID-19 vaccinations seem to open opportunities to celebrate.

Last spring, Ontario’s health minister partly blamed improper Mother’s Day gatherings for driving up COVID-19 cases in the province.

The province expanded vaccine eligibility for several groups on Thursday – residents aged 50 and older, those with high-risk health conditions and a number of employees who cannot work from home all became eligible.

In Peel Region, one of the areas hit hardest by COVID-19, vaccinations were opened to all residents aged 18 and older.

Adblock test (Why?)
