Tighter border measures take effect in Nova Scotia - HalifaxToday.ca

Nova Scotia is imposing tighter measures at the border on Monday as the province grapples with record high COVID-19 numbers.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, Nova Scotia will be closed to people who intend to move here as well as people coming from Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

There will be no exceptions for funerals and limited exceptions to be with an immediate family member who is at end of life.

The following people will be allowed to enter Nova Scotia:

  • permanent residents returning to the province
  • people who work outside the province
  • post-secondary students returning home or entering to study; parents from outside Nova Scotia are not allowed pick students up or drop them off
  • people traveling for child custody reasons, following the child custody protocol
  • people who are exempt from self-isolation, following the exempt traveler protocol (for example, long-haul truck drivers, airline crew, first responders, people needing essential health services)
  • people who follow the protocol for travel between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for work, school and child care only

Speaking at Friday's COVID briefing, Dr. Robert Strang, Chief Medical Officer of Health, said this will be in effect until at least the end of May.

"Province-wide restrictions for the month of May will help us with the outbreak in the Halifax area and it will also help limit or slow spread in other communities," said Strang.

"Tightening up our borders even further to ensure travellers aren't bringing additional virus here is also important."
