A new record for electricity consumption was set on Saturday night, according to BC Hydro.
As temperatures soared across the province, BC Hydro said customers used 7,972 megawatts of electricity.
This broke a previous record set on Aug. 18, 2020, when electricity consumption reached 7,897 megawatts.
A statement from BC Hydro said that they are anticipating demand to increase further as temperatures are expected to climb in the coming week.
BC Hydro said they are predicting that electricity consumption will peak on Monday, and could reach up to 8,300 megawatts.
According to BC Hydro, the majority of planned outages have been cancelled, and disconnections for non-payment have been suspended to ensure residents stay safe in the heat.
To keep cool and save money, BC Hydro suggests keeping doors and windows closed if indoor temperatures are cooler than outside. Keeping drapes and blinds closed can block out up to 65 per cent of the heat.
Using smaller appliances like microwaves, crockpots or toaster ovens to prepare meals will also save energy and avoid extra heat produced by larger appliances.
According to Environment Canada, over 40 B.C. cities and towns hit record-breaking temperatures Saturday.
With a high of 40.2 C, Saturday was the hottest June day in Kamloops since records began in 1890. The temperature crushed the old record of 38.4 C, set in 2006.
Temperatures in Kelowna reached 38.8 C, breaking the old mark of 37.5 C set in 2002.
