Ottawa Public Health reported 34 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths on Sunday.

The update, which was based on numbers compiled on Saturday, indicated there were 18 people with COVID-19 in hospital and three were in intensive care units. There were no new hospital admissions in the update.

There were 350 known active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, according to the health unit’s report.

When it came to ongoing outbreaks, there were seven at health-care institutions, two at child cares and schools, and one at a community workplace.

The seven-day-average reproduction rate was estimated at 0.80. A value under 1.0 indicates the spread of the virus is slowing down.

The Ontario government on Sunday reported 530 new cases of COVID-19 provincewide with seven additional deaths and 763 more cases resolved.

There had been 539,683 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario since the beginning of the pandemic, as of the province’s Sunday update.

Across the Ottawa River, the Quebec government on Sunday reported five new cases of COVID-19 in the Outaouais region, part of the 151 new cases across that province.

There have been 12,368 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Outaouais since the beginning of the pandemic.

There was some good news over the weekend for Ontario residents who received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as their first dose and are eager for their second dose.

The provincial government announced Saturday that it was reducing the second-dose interval for the AstraZeneca vaccine to eight weeks from the previous 12-week wait time.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, people who received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be eligible to book their second-dose appointments at an interval of eight weeks or more with informed consent.

“Individuals who wish to receive an mRNA vaccine for their second dose can book an appointment through the provincial booking system, public health units that use their own booking system or a participating pharmacy,” the province said in the announcement.

Patients who prefer to receive a second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine can contact the pharmacy or primary caregiver where they received the first dose.

While the 12-week interval “helps to ultimately provide more protection, some may choose to receive their second dose sooner to have the increased protection provided by a second dose earlier,” the province said.

“All of these options provide protection against COVID-19, including the Delta variant, and have been deemed safe.”

Meanwhile, Ottawa patios were busy during a weekend of sunny weather after the province entered Step 1 of its economic reopening plan on Friday. The City of Ottawa didn’t have information on bylaw enforcement activities over the weekend.
