Region reports 36 new COVID cases Tuesday - KitchenerToday.com

The health department in Waterloo Region reported 36 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. That compares to 44 on Monday.

It puts the overall total at 16,281.

27 people are receiving treatment for the virus in a local hospital --- 20 are in intensive care.

The active caseload is at 345.

Over 364,000 residents of Waterloo Region (18+) have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which works out to over 69 per cent. 29,000 plus residents (6.35 per cent) have been fully vaccinated.

Here are some other updates from the region's dashboard: 

  • 3,370 cases have screened positive for variants of concern - 2,982 are the Alpha variant (first found in U.K.) - six are linked to the Beta variant (first detected in South Africa) - 12 are linked to the Delta strain (first located in India) - 58 are linked to the Gamma variant (first found in Brazil) - 312 cases where a mutation has been detected
  • The local death toll remains at 256. No new deaths have been reported since May 22
  • 15,671 resolved cases (96 per cent)
  • Over 497,000 tests have been done

There are currently four active outbreaks in the region. Two are in workplaces:

  • Congregate setting 42 - multiple locations (28 cases)
  • Food and beverage services 18 (two cases)
  • Farm 2 (13 cases)
  • Forest Heights long-term care - Hewson Unit (two cases in residents, five in staff)

Meantime, the province reported 469 cases on Tuesday.

The rest of the provincial COVID-19 totals are posted below:

  • 1.17 million vaccinations have been completed - 10.26 million doses have been administered
  • 537,076 total cases
  • 520,811 resolved cases
  • 621 people are in hospital - 481 are in intensive care - 305 are on a ventilator
  • 8,887 deaths (18 new)
  • 17,579 tests completed Monday - 15.42 million since January 15, 2020
