Kelowna’s unemployment rate took a significant jump in June, moving up half a percentage point to 6.3% from 5.8% in May, according to Statistics Canada.
That makes it the eighth best mark among Canada’s 37 major metropolitan markets, but Kelowna normally finds itself in the top five nationally.
The Central Okanagan figures don’t jive with the national numbers, as Canada’s overall unemployment rate fell to 7.8% for the month compared with 8.2% in May. The statistics agency says that is the lowest unemployment rate of the pandemic since the 7.5% recorded in March.
Kelowna’s labour force, which is all members of a particular population who are able to work, increased by 1,100 in June, while the number of unemployed people jumped by about 600 to 7,000. The participation rate, which is the number of people working or looking for work, increased by about 500 last month.
The Thompson Okanagan region’s unemployment rate fell a full percentage point in June, from 7.5% to 6.5%.
The job figures arrive as Okanagan restaurant and bars search desperately pleading for workers. COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have lifted and businesses are back to running full steam ahead, but potential employees are being snapped up quickly.
Overall, the Canadian economy added 230,700 jobs in June as restrictions put in place to slow the pandemic were rolled back across the country.
The gain came as the number of part-time positions rose 263,900, bringing it basically back to pre-pandemic levels, while the number of full-time jobs fell 33,200.
Statistics Canada said the part-time gains were driven by jumps in jobs in the hard-hit retail and food services sectors, and concentrated among youth.
