COVID-19: Ontario cases hit 258, highest one-day total in July; Ottawa has four new cases - Ottawa Citizen

Ontario’s new cases soared by 258 on Saturday, the highest one-day total in July.

There were six new deaths reported, for a total of 9,345 deaths since the pandemic begin.

There were 137 resolved cases Friday, the province reported.

Hot spots include Toronto (53), York (33), Waterloo (28), Hamilton (27) and Peel with 26.

There were 105 people in hospital with COVID-19 symptoms, 112 in ICU and 83 on ventilators.

(*Note: Ontario Public Health statistics of ICU hospitalizations and ventilator cases contain some patients who no longer test positive for COVID-19 but who are being treated for conditions caused by the virus.)

In regions around the capital, one new case was reported at each of the Eastern Ontario, Kingston and Renfrew health units. There were no new cases reported in Leeds, Grenville & Lanark county.

The province reported it had administered 81,590 doses of COVID-19 vaccine on Friday, for a total of 19,459,198 doses.

More than 19,100 tests were completed, with 1.5 per cent showing positive for COVID-19.

Latest COVID-19 news in Ottawa

Ottawa Public Health reported four new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, down from the 10 new cases reported Friday.

There were no new deaths reported.

There have been 27,815 cases and 593 deaths since the pandemic began.

One person remains in hospital with COVID-related symptoms, but there are no public outbreaks.

In indicators of note, the rolling average of cases per 100,000 residents is up slightly to 4, while positivity in testing is 0.5.

The reproductive number, which calculates the number of people a COVID-19 patient could re-infect is 1.12. A number lower than one indicates the infection is receding.

Ottawa Public Health is encouraging residents to get their “two-dose summer” moving at any of a number of drop-in clinics in the area Saturday.
