Health Canada recalls Old Spice and Secret brand antiperspirant sprays - Toronto Star

Health Canada is recalling 1.4 million units of Old Spice and Secret antiperspirant products due to a detection of benzene, a chemical known to potentially cause cancer.

The recall involves eight Old Spice and Secret antiperspirant sprays in aerosol cans.

“Consumers should stop using and appropriately discard the recalled aerosol spray products, and contact the company for reimbursement,” said Health Canada in a statement Friday.

Based on the amount of benzene found in the products, the carcinogens found should not be a cause of serious health risks, the government department said.

“Based on exposure modelling and the cancer risk assessments published by the Environmental Protection Agency …, daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences,” said Health Canada.

According to the govrenment department, exposure to benzene can occur by inhaling the products, consuming them orally and they can seep through the skin. This can potentially result in cancers, including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.

Health Canada says the manufacturer has not received any reports of incidents or injuries in relation to the use of the products.
