There are still no concrete timelines in place for when health care IT systems will be brought back online.
On Wednesday the province confirmed that the outage is the result of a cyber attack. Many of the specifics about the situation still cannot be discussed due to the nature of the investigation.
Pat Hepditch, Vice President of Solutions and Infrastructure with the NL Centre for Health Information, says the restoration process is underway—though it is in the very early stages. He says it is difficult to give any timelines.
He says these types of incidents often result in extended outages. However, he says there is a backup plan and they are working with Bell to return service. The system must be brought back online slowly to ensure that it is safe for everyone.
The provincial government and others involved in trying to address a cyber attack that has paralyzed the province’s health care IT systems have had to walk a very fine line in responding to the many questions surrounding the incident.
Health Minister John Haggie, Eastern Health CEO David Diamond and Pat Hepditch held a news conference yesterday to update the public on the incident.
Minister Haggie indicated that whoever is responsible might be watching very closely the comments being made in the media and in the House of Assembly and they cannot do anything to jeopardize the ongoing investigation and efforts to address the issue.
More detail was sought on the extent and nature of the outage, but Haggie was very guarded in his response. He says anything related to IT could cause “major problems” in dealing with the situation. “It is really important that I don’t, in my comments here, provide a handbook for the next person who wishes to do the same to our system again.”
